Hello……….
So here is the final post of my series on how fun and easy recycling can be! I took my last trip to the recycling center the other day. I’ve come a long way from the girl who didn’t know what to do at a “do it yourself” recycling center. I’m kinda sad that I’m going to live somewhere else since i’ve gotten used to recycling here. but that will open up a whole new experience in my now eco friendly life!
I found an interesting website with a two minute video on how to reduce the amount of packages you buy. It is very similar to the video we watched in class last tuesday I think it was. check it out, I found it pretty informative and its only two minutes of your life. http://ecologue.com/ShowTopic/recycling-and-reducing-waste?affiliate=blocker&omnisource=SEM&c1=Ecologue&c2=Google&c3=Recycling&c4=recycling&c5=SEM&s_kwcid=recycling1355824389
This website was very useful in many ways, like the other day in class we were talking about how we all throw out our old computers thinking that ther is no place for them, well this site tells us otherwise. Here is the url http://ecologue.com/ShowArticle/digital-reprocessing
There are many things that we can do for ourselves and our environment if we can just stop and think where would this actually go when I put it in the trash. What repercussions will my community reep for his action. I know it sounds corny, but I think there needs to be more people thinking like that. I believe that is how recycling has caught on to more and more people in these past few years.
I Think my project has been pretty successful in what I wanted to accomplish. I started recycling, I reduced my waste by buying less or packages that were recyclable, and I reused glass jars after finishing the contents. I noticed that I became very aware of what I was buying and throwing away. As I said in posts before I felt especially guilty at times. I have definately learn alot in doing this and I hope I taught you all something as well. I really appreciate all your comments to my blogs. So here I am signing off for the R-cubed project!!!!!!!!!!! peace!
Hey hey
It is time for yet another exciting post from your fellow class mate the recycler! The project is going well. It can be slow at times, waiting for all the bins to fill up but in between I find time to recycle at school (where there are recycling bins), other peoples houses and my work. Usually I just take the recycled goods from the last two places and keep them in my car until I get home. I always feel shame come over me when I think about throwing a recycled good in the actual trash………
For instance I was helping my fiance move out of his house this past weekend and he had loads of random things that needed to be looked over and thrown away. So we start going through things, putting them in piles to recycle later and all of the sudden this guilt came over me while I looked at all these things that could be recycled. I would have never second guessed throwing them away before I took this class and started this project. And thats when it became evident to me that there are so many uneducated people out there just like I was. Not caring where their trash ends up just as long as they dont have to look at it anymore. Just getting it out of the way, out of their hands. Not truely registering where this waste goes when its out of their hands; Into poor neighboor hoods in almost every community. When and how can we educate these unknowing people? I feel that little by little through grassroot groups, like we learned in class we would be able to change peoples views. Thats what we have to believe to stay sane in this crazy consumeristic world.
On a happy note……over spring break I traveled to Hickory, North Carolina to visit some family and found myself really impressed with how recycle friendly the community was! In about every dinnery, store, or cafe there was a recycling bin for plastics, glass, and cans on the way out the door. I would walk by and double take, I was not used to seeing this but I liked the fact that it was so easy to participate in it. I mean why not do it if its sitting right there? Also the trash service makes you pay for a bin to put any and all of your recycable goods in for the week plastics, glass and cans ( you don’t even have to sort it) and then they pick it up and recycle it for you. How awesome is that? Come on why is Kansas so behind?
here is a very informative website about the environment

and here is another song about recycling….I love music and its an excellent way to share info. and its by Jack Johnson!

Hello all,
Hello Everyone!!!
I am so excited that you guys are showing an interest in my project, it makes for a fun time in doing it. I love all the questions you guys came up with and the advice it really helped to know that people went through and are thinking the same things that I had.
In answer to your questions-#6 recyclables are certain kinds of hard plastic (like Dillons salad containers) or sometimes egg cartons. I found a variety of things that were #6, things I thought you couldn’t even recycle-thats why I was mad when I figured out that Manhattan doesn’t recycle these. I found that it is pretty easy to see what is recyclable and what isn’t. My roomate’s mom actually is pretty into recycling and she told taught me that usually there is a number on the bottom of each container, box, can etc, with a little triangle around it and THAT is the number of recyclable good it is. # 1′s and #2′s (plastic pop bottles, milk jugs, creamer containers) can be considered the same so just put them in the same recycle bin……It is kinda exciting to see what is what. Also, I found that even if it doesn’t have a number on it, it may still be recyclable. Like for instance cereal boxes, oatmeal containers, any paper boxes really. I found that out from wandering aimlessly around Howie’s:/
The thing that I have found most building up in our recycling bins are probably the # 1′s and 2′s, pop bottles, milk & juice cartons. That and tin cans (like vegetable cans, and soup cans). The things that I am recycling for the project are Glass, tin, aluminum(pop & beer cans), plastics, paper sacks and paper board. Oh and I take plastic sacks to walmart and put them in a bin by the front door VERY EASY!!!! Another person asked if Manhattan had any plans for mandating or even educating on recycling, which I do believe so as said in class at one point but it wasn’t active right now for some reason or another> but I do know that Lydia in our class is talking with the campus recycle people as well as the Manhattan city to get something really started for people to be more ACTIVE…so I would talk to her.
Thank you again for being so positive and useful, and as always I will keep you guys posted…..
Hello again!!!
lets get up to date on my project…..I have been doing this project for about 3 weeks now and I am loving it. My roomates are egar to pitch in their waste, friends are complimenting our house on how environmentally friendly we are, and it just plain feels good to do so. I also have noticed that everytime I go to throw something away I think about whether its recyclable or not. And if it can’t be recycled I feel really guilty because I am also trying to reduce. But last week I did buy a glass jelly jar that I plan on cleaning out and reusing as a cup; which is real exciting!!!!
Last week I took my first visit to Howie’s Recycling Center! It was an expirence….the last time I had been to a recycling center was when I was a child. My dad and I would take pop cans for money, we gave the bag to the men and they took it away to a big can crusher and that was it.
So here I am at Howie’s with all these recyclable goods and have not a clue what to do with them. I asked the lady at the reception desk how does this work where do I put my stuff? She looked at me blankly and said “you do it yourself! The bins are labeled.” I looked at her in astonishment, why is this woman so rude? I didn’t know what to do, it was my first time being there she could have been a little more sympathetic. You walk into this huge garage looking thing and see piles and piles of things you don’t even know where to start. needless to say I figured out after wondering around for a while. I think this helped me out tremendously, so I could see what else I could recycle and how things are really done.
The one bad thing that I found out was that I was saving #6 recyclable things but the lady told me that they didn’t take those and that no one did in the town of Manhattan. I was a little bit shocked to hear that so I ended up throwing them away and I felt guilty………
In the end I think that it is a great idea for everyone to throw their own stuff in the bins. Then people can actually participate in more of the process. And maybe understand and see how much can really be recycled. Let me know if you guys have anymore suggestions……
Hello Everyone!
For my project I chose to do a lived experience. What I am doing is reducing, reusing, and recycling as much as I can (hints the R-Squared). I was given some excellent ideas when I talked about it to the class, and have included them in my project. through the duration of these next 5 weeks I will shop, eat, and live differently as all of this is a part of reducing, reusing and recycling! So here is what I purpose to do…….
- I will start trying to buy more things that are glass rather than plasic and then reuse
them. (reusing part)
- I will try to recycle all things that are recyclable. (recycle)
- Think about what I am buying and if it is needed. (reduce)
- When the bags get full I will take them to Howie’s here in town and RECYCLE!!!!
I feel that if just a couple people could live like this the environment would be a better place. I have asked my roomates to participate in recycling with me if they would like and they all have been very excited…they really just needed someone to say here are the bags, just throw your stuff in there and I’ll take care of the rest. I Think that alot of people are like this. They might be thinking about recycling and just never get around to it. We really need to encourage one another to do this, so it really helps that my roomates are contributing too, as well as having a class project that has to be related to the environment. I have been wanting to recycle and live more environment friendly for a long time now. Now that I have the chance I dont know why I never started in the first place. It doesn’t take that long to throw the plastic container, pop can, or cardboard into the recycling bin. Just think of how much less waste I will be producing!!!!!
