(Change of plans… sorry to all of my Fair-Trade supporters! keep it up, though!!!)
Last year, I lived alone in Kansas City and had a great job as a Barista Trainer inside the KC Public Library on the Plaza. During my time there, I met a lot of really wonderful people, all of whom happened to be homeless. Listening to them, and their stories, I realized that they knew, far better than myself, how to truly live life. When you are stripped of all your material possessions, and forced to work together to survive, you make life-long friends, as well as learn that life is far better when you’re not fighting for money. One of my many heart-felt dreams is to build an outstanding Homeless Shelter in Kansas City, so I’m using this project to get started locally. For my project, I would like to focus on the homeless in Manhattan, through the “what one person can do” outline. I will use 5 of the accepted methods, including: Combination, Knowledge, Community, Political and Activist.
* For Combination, I plan to create a website dedicated solely to the hope of informing Manhattan residents of how important this issue is, as well as what they can do to help.
* For Knowledge, I plan to research the Homeless situation here in town, as well as visit the shelter so I have personal experience and am well informed on the subject, so that I can pass on what I’ve learned to the residents of Manhattan.
* For Community, I plan to create awareness to the citizens of Manhattan, asking for their help as far as donating canned goods/non-perishable foods and no-longer-used clothing.
* For Political, I plan to write to the City Council, asking them to reconsider the current conditions of the homeless shelter, as well as asking for some sort of support in the creation of a food bank/soup kitchen. Manhattan currently does not offer any sort of nutritional aid to those who are homeless.
* And finally, for Activist, I plan to create a campaign to get started on the creation of a food bank/soup kitchen, here in town. I am not expecting anything huge, just something simple, maybe free food one day a week. Being homeless is hard enough, being homeless AND starving is something we can change, if we work together as a community.
Hope you all enjoy!!!
